Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr will have more selection headache, when Nigeria take on the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the second friendly on the 8th of June, as two of his starters in the first match have pulled out due to injury.
Defender, William Troost-Ekong, who limped off in the loss to Cameroon, and left-back, Jamilu Collins have been ruled out of the second friendly on Tuesday by the German tactician.
Speaking after the game, Rohr confirmed the injuries, while saying he may switch to a back three. He said: “Unfortunately, we lost two players to injury, which will make it difficult for the second game in the defence because Troost- Ekong and Collins are out, they cannot play.”
He added: “So, we have to manage the difficult situation. But it’s also an opportunity to play with three defenders only and to change the system to try something different, that’s why we are happy to play the second game.”
The 67-year-old then lamented on missed chances from his players, saying: “We had 17 shots on goal while they only had three with one on target, which was the goal. Our domination was not good enough, it was not realistic enough because we had to score at the beginning of the game and we did not. And when you don’t score, very often, you concede a goal, which was what happened. We had a good integration of the players, with three of them playing for the first time.”
When asked about the new players, the German gaffer said: “It was very interesting to see some new players, we missed about seven or eight players and we had to manage the situation.”
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon again at the Stadion Wiener Neustadt – the same venue – on Tuesday by 5 pm Nigerian time.
