TOKYO2020: Aruna Quadri crashes out to end Nigeria’s table-tennis medal dream

Aruna Quadri has been knocked out from table tennis men’s singles events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His defeat ensures that all Team Nigeria’s representatives in table tennis will now return to the country without a medal.

The Team Nigeria’s captain to Tokyo2020 lost 4-2 (15-13, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 6-11) to a Brazilian, Gustavo Tsuboi, in a keenly fought contest.

Nigeria’s Offiong Edem had Monday bowed out of the women’s singles event of the table tennis competition of 2020 Olympic Games on Monday. Edem lost 4-1 to Lily Zhang of the USA at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, in spite of winning the first set 15-13. 

Edem failed to maintain the momentum after beating Hungary’s Dora Madarasz in her opening round fixture.

She fell 2-11 and 2-11 in the next two sets under nine minutes. The 34-year-old Nigerian tried to mount a fightback, but she could not stem the tide as she lost 8-11 and 6-11 in the fourth and fifth sets respectively.

On Saturday, Funke Oshonaike, who has represented Nigeria at seven Olympic Games lost the first three sets to her opponent lost 1-4 to Juan Liu of the U.S in the women’s table tennis singles.

Olajide Omotayo crashed out of the men’s table tennis singles event on Saturday. The tennis star was humiliated with 0-4 defeat by Tiago Apolonia of Portugal.
