Tokyo 2020: Nigeria’s medal hopes in Athletics suffers a huge setback

The Nigerian Athletics team have suffered a massive blow ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Athletics event, which starts this Friday

Nigeria’s medal hopes in the Athletics event of Tokyo 2020 have suffered a huge blow after ten of the the 23 members were ruled out of the competition.

The athletes have been ruled out of the games due to a non-compliance in out of competition testing. According to the Athletics Integrity Unit, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria failed to provide proper anti-doping measures.

Under rule 15 of Anti-doping rules, athletes from countries in Category A are to undergo at least three-no-notice-out of-competition tests (urine and blood) conducted no less than three weeks apart in the ten months leading up to a major tournament.

They then become become eligible to represent their country at the World Athletics Championships or the Olympics only after taking these tests.

Nigeria fall under Category A in the year 2021, but ten of the Athletics team failed to meet the testing requirements and as a result, have been ruled out from competing.

It leaves the country with just 13 athletes going into the Athletics event which starts on Friday. The good news some of the medal hopefuls like Blessing Okagbare, Divine Oduduru and Tobi Amusan are still part of the 13 athletes cleared to to compete.

However, it’s a huge blow to Nigeria’s hopes of winning a medal. It has been a disappointing tournament for the Nigerian team so far, with just two wins in all events so far.
