Nigeria’s male basketball national team, D’Tigers, got their Tokyo 2020 Olympic campaign off to a losing start, falling 84-67 to Team Australia on Sunday morning.
It was a close encounter initially, with both teams ending the first quarter tied at 23 points apiece before Australia won the second quarter by three points to enter the half-time break with a 43-40 lead over D’Tigers.
Nigeria’s poor shooting and passing in offensive transitions let them down in the second half, though, Australia could not take advantage of it in the third quarter which ended with D’Tigers down by six points only.
However, Australia took full advantage of Nigeria’s turnovers and poor shooting in the fourth quarter to claim a comfortable win in the end, with Patty Mills leading the scoring with 25 points.
This loss comes after Nigeria fell to same Australia 108-69 in a pre-Olympic exhibition match played in Las Vegas.
Next up for D’Tigers as they look to get their Olympic campaign back on track is a clash with Germany on Wednesday morning.
