Tokyo 2020: Ese Brume wins Nigeria’s first medal

The five-time African Junior Champion was close to winning gold, but she had to settle for Bronze to erase the disappointment of 2016 Rio games

Ese Brume has won Nigeria’s first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after she finished third in the final of the Women’s long jump.

Brume had a jump of 6.97m to finish behind Germany’s Malaika Mihambo and America’s Brittney Reese, who won the gold and silver respectively.

Brume started well with a 6.97m jump, which turned out to be her best jump. Brittney Reese’s best jump was also 6.97 and it looked like it would not be eclipsed until Mihambo went further in her last jump with 7.00m to claim gold.

The German now adds the Olympic gold to her World Championship title. For Brume, she should be satisfied with her performance after the disappointment of Rio 2016, where she finished fifth in the final.

She’s now the third Nigerian to win a medal in the long jump event of the Olympics after Chioma Ajunwa’s gold medal in Atlanta and Blessing Okagbare’s silver in 2008.
