Second-half substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina were the hero for Italy as they defeated Austria after extra time to progress to the quarterfinal of the Euro 2020.
Both teams could not break the deadlock in the regular 90 minutes, with Marko Arnautović coming closest, but his goal was chalked off for offside.
It was 84th minute substitute, Federico Chiesa, who scored the opener in the 5th minute of extra-time, controlling a chip pass from Leonardo Spinazzola, and blasting the ball past the keeper with his left foot.
Another substitute, Matteo Pessina scored the second goal just before the first period of extra-time, after the ball scrambled to his feet and he hit a drive shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
With six minutes to go in the extra time, Sasa Kalajdzic pulled one back for the Austrians from a Louis Schaub corner kick.
Austria’s historic run has come to an end, and Italy have now progressed to the quarterfinal and will face the winner between Belgium and Portugal.
Italy have now set a national team record with the most unbeaten run. The Azzurri have now gone 31 games without suffering a defeat for the first time ever.
