Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has been handed a condition to move away from Leganes in his quest for top-flight football.
The former Chelsea star was tipped to leave the Spanish side after relegating to the Segunda Division at the end of the 2019/20 season. However, the 27-year-old defender remained with the Cucumber Planters, played 24 La Liga 2 games and scored one goal.
Omeruo battled with a recurring muscle injury at the start of the season that made him miss some crucial games including Nigeria’s AFCON qualifiers against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone. However, he bounced back to help Leganes qualify for the Promoción LaLiga.
In an interview made available to ALL BALLER ZONE, the tall centre-back reflected on the concluded season and discussed his hopes for the new one. He expressed his desire to play in La Liga. and the condition that will cause Leganes to sell him to another side.
“For me, I still have a contract with Leganes but I am hoping to find a team in the La Liga to buy. Leganes have already expressed their wishes, they have told me what they want;
‘Kenneth, we know we told you before the start of last season that we would let you go if we do not come up. But we still need you because we want to try to come up again next year.’
“They also understand that I want to be better and I want to play in the first league so the only option they gave is that they would let me go if a club comes to buy, they don’t want a loan deal. I respect the decision because I have to respect my contract,” the former Chelsea man added.
Leganes came close to securing a spot in the 2021/22 La Liga season. The team finished in third position, 9 points behind champions Espanyol and Mallorca. They lost the promotion play-off semi-finals to eventual winners, Rayo Vallecano. Omeruo believes that injuries suffered over the course of the season played a major role.
“It was a difficult season as you know, I had a few injuries and the team had a lot of injuries. At the end of the day, the players we needed to push the team were not available to help,” he reflected.
The Super Eagles star would join with the rest of the Leganes squad ahead of the new season. The transfer window would close at the end of August. It remains to be seen if Kenneth Omeruo would join another club before then.
