Super Eagles star contracts COVID-19 ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Super Eagles defender, Kevin Akpoguma, who recently got his first call up in 2021, has withdrawn from the team’s World Cup qualifiers, after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Hoffenheim defender was among the 30-man squad released by Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr for Nigeria’s games against Liberia and Cape Verde. He has now been forced to miss out on both matches after testing positive for COVID-19.

The German club announced this in an official statement on their website, saying: “Kevin Akpoguma tested positive for Corona despite being fully vaccinated. He will not make the trip to the Nigerian national team and instead went into quarantine at home.

“Kevin Akpoguma is symptom-free and is fine. In addition, all present players and members of the coaching and functional team were tested. All test results were negative.”

The 25-year-old defender is now the second Super Eagles player to withdraw from the qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde, after Brentford, Frank Onyeka pulled out for also contracting COVID-19.
