Super Eagles CRUSH Sudan to qualify for AFCON round of 16

The Super Eagles followed up their opening day victory over Egypt with a comfortable 3-1 win against Sudan to maintain top spot in Group D at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Villarreal winger, Samuel Chukwueze who endured a below-par first game came alive against Sudan and scored inside the first three minutes to give Nigeria a deserved lead, Taiwo Awonyi headed in a second and Moses Simon scored the third before Walieldin Khidir netted a penalty for the Falcons of Jediane.

Austin Eguavoen retained the same starting line-up against the Pharaohs of Egypt while Sudan made just one change to their squad from the one that drew against Guinea-Bissau.

Chukwueze sent Super Eagles fans inside the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua into wild jubilations when he latched onto the pass from Moses Simon and placed it beyond Abu-Eshrein in goal for Sudan.

Nigeria continued to dominate the game without even getting out of the first gear. The Super Eagles had no shortage of chances to build on their advantage before the interval, but could not convert until a slightly bizarre second on the stroke of half-time.

A free-kick from the right was flicked on by Captain William Troost-Ekong and the ball was then deflected onto the head of Awoniyi – who certainly did not know much about it – before squirming under the grasp of Sudan goalkeeper Ali Abdallah Abu-Eshrein.

Moses Simon made it 3-0 after a one-two with Awoniyi at the start of the second half but Sudan got a consolation goal after VAR called the referee’s attention to Ola Aina’s stamp on a Sudan player.

Walieldin Khedr Safour Daiyeen beat Maduka Okoye from 12 yards as the match finished 3-1 in favour of the Super Eagles. From the result, Nigeria join host Cameroon and Morocco in the knockout round.

Nigeria have now qualified for her 14th consecutive knockout round in AFCON and will wrap up Group D with a final game against Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.
