Serena advances to Round of 32 as Venus crashes out of French Open

23-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams is through to the round of 32 of the 2021 French Open tournament after beating Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu in a tough three-set match.

The seventh-seed American defeated Buzarnescu 2-1 (6-3 5-7 6-1) to set up a meeting in the last 32 with fellow American, Danielle Collins. Serena Williams winner has a strong chance to go all the way with Naomi Osaka and Ash Barty out of the tournament. 

Ashleigh Barty, the No. 1-ranked player in women’s tennis, is out of the French Open after her left hip injury got worse during her second-round match with Magda Linette on Thursday. Naomi Osaka has also pulled out of the tournament due to controversies surrounding press duties. 

Williams, who is widely considered as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, is targeting a 24th major title to equal Australian Margaret Court’s all-time record.

Meanwhile, Serena’s sister, Venus has not enjoyed that kind of success in the women’s doubles. Coco Gauff and Venus Williams fell as they lost 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-3 to 13th seeds, Ellen Perez and Saisai Zheng.
