Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal not enough as Germany showed why they are the most successful in the history of the European Championship as they defeated Germany 4-2 in Munich to boost their hopes of making the second round.
It was Portugal who scored the opening goal in the 15th minute, following a swift counterattack from the defending champions, and Cristiano Ronaldo scored from a Diogo Jota assist.
The Germans levelled matters in the 35th minute from Ruben Dias own goal, after Kia Havertz put him under pressure. Four minutes later, Portugal conceded another own goal, this time, it was Raphael Guerreiro.
Six minutes after the restart, Germany extended their lead to 3-1, after Havertz scored from Robin Gosens assist. Gosens then scored the fourth goal for the Germans on the hour mark.
In the 69th minute, Portugal pulled one back after Ronaldo refused to give up and crossed the ball for Jota, who blasted the ball into the net, that was the best the defending champions could get, as the game ended 4-2.
The group is now very open as only one point separates leaders France, second Germany with three points, and Portugal who also have three points. This is indeed the group of death.
