Rohr happy with victory over Liberia, hints Ighalo will play against Cape Verde

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed that the win against Liberia did not come easy as they have to fight for the win on the Match-Day 5 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

Two penalties from Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa gave the three-time African Champions the needed win at the Grande Stade de Tangier in Morrocco.

Speaking to reporters after the encounter, Rohr said: ‘It was not an easy game for us. Just like the game in Lagos – it was even more difficult today. Despite the good pitch, we tried to play our quick football with few touches but our opponent was very organized and gave us a good fight and we had to fight.

‘In the air and on the ground, it was not easy. We got two penalties in the end which was clear but I would’ve preferred to score normal goals and hope we do so in three days’ time.

‘The return of players like Ndidi, Iwobi – who didn’t play last time was good for us. Although, we have to work offensively and still have work to do.’

The German tactician hinted that returnee Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo could feature in the final group match against Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday and also explained why the Saudi Arabia based forward did not play against the Lone Stars.

‘The reason we asked Ighalo to come back was because we have a very young team and we wanted someone to help them with experience in the striking position. He is a good goalscorer, he only arrived on Thursday that’s why he didn’t participate in this match but I hope he will be able to help us on Tuesday.’

Nigeria currently lead Group C with 12 points while Cape verde sit second with 10 points after the same number of matches. So, Rohr’s men need to avoid defeat on Tuesday to progress into the knockout phase of the Qatar 2022 qualifier.
