Champions of the Nigeria Women’s Premier League (NWFL), Rivers Angels thrashed Niger side, AS Police 5-0 to qualify for the WAFU last four ahead of the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League.
Head coach, Edwin Okon maintained his lineup from the previous outing in today’s game, and it paid off as the NWFL champions put three goals past their opponents in the first half.
Rivers Angels scored the opening goal in the 13th minute from their striker, Ikekhua. Her strike partner, Ogebe could have made it 2-0 ten minutes later, but her powerful shot hit the woodwork and no one could finish up with the rebound.
After two goals were disallowed for offside, the NWFL champions got the second goal in the 36th minute, after a lovely cross from Ikekhua was tapped in from near post by Alice to make it 2-0.
Just like Ikekhua, Alice also turned provider after scoring, as she burst forward on the stroke of half-time, rounded the keeper and laid the ball for left winger, Ezenagu to finish off and extend their lead to three.
Again, another scored turned provider, as Ezenagu moved forward down the left on the hour mark, to set up Ikekhua, who made no mistake by scoring her brace, and Rivers Angels’ fourth goal on the night.
The Nigerian side were not done, as Ezenagu dashed forward in the 77th minute, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted in the ball to make it 5-0.
Rivers Angels have not progressed to the semifinal of the WAFU qualifiers and will take on the second-placed team in WAFU A between USFA from Burkina Faso, Onze Sœurs de Gagnoa from Ivory Coast, or Togo’s Académie Amis du Monde on the second of August.
