The Red Devils sent out a statement to the rest of their Premier League rivals following a comprehensive win over Marcelo Bielsa’s men
Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba were the stars as Manchester United thrashed Leeds United 5-1 at Old Trafford in their opening Premier League match of the season.
Fernandes became the first United to score a hat-trick on the opening day of a league season since Lou Macari vs Birmingham in 1977-78, while Pogba is the 7th different player to register four assists in a single Premier League match, and the first Man Utd player to do so.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men started on the front foot and they went ahead on the half-hour mark through Bruno Fernandes, who finished off a Pogba assist.
The goal ensured Man Utd went into the break with the lead, but Leeds drew level three minutes after resumption, courtesy of a pile driver from Luke Ayling.
However, the parity would only last for four minutes as Mason Greenwood put United again following another brilliant ball from Pogba.
Fernandes made it three two minutes later off another assist from Pogba. The Portuguese star then completed his hat-trick on the hour mark, finishing off a delightful ball from Victor Lindelof.
Fred then completed the thrashing with a strike in the 65th following another assist from Pogba. It was a dominant performance from United and it should send out a warning to the rest of their title rivals.
