Victor Osimhen netted four times for the Super Eagles as they hammered Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in the Match-Day 2 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The game which was played in Agadir, Morocco because the host don’t have a CAF approved stadium saw Napoli striker, Osimhen equal the record of football legend, Rasheed Yekini who was the last player to score four goals in a match for Nigeria. Yekini did so during the 7-1 demolition of Burkina Faso in July, 1997.
Osimhen, who finished the Serie A season as Napoli’s topscorer with 14 goals scored just once in the first half as Nigeria took a 3-0 lead into the break. However, the 23-year-old re-entered the pitch in the second half without his protective face mask which he wore for majority of the season following a nasty injury during a match against Inter Milan.
Interestingly, he powered in a second half hat-trick as Nigeria finished the game 10-0 to continue with their perfect start to the qualifier. No official confirmation yet if Osimhen had the permission of the Eagles doctor to play without the protective mask in the second half but he looked fine as he lasted the whole duration of the game.
Nigeria are now top of Group A with six points following victories over Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe.
