Osimhen becomes highest scoring Nigerian in Serie A

Nigerian duo, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are currently in fine goalscoring form for Napoli and Atalanta respectively in the Italian Serie A this season.

While Lookman recorded his sixth goal of the season during the 2-1 defeat against Napoli yesterday, Osimhen made it his eighth goal of the campaign, thereby becoming the highest scoring Nigerian ever in Italy with 32goals so far.

Osimhen overtakes Simy Nwankwo, who held the record with 31goals in over 100 hundred appearances across two clubs, Crotone and Salernitana. Interestingly, former Inter Milan forward Obafemi Martins is listed in third position with 28goals.

Osimhen, who already missed a month of action due to injury, has slotted back into Luciano Spalletti’s side with relative ease, capping his fine form with his first hat-trick for the club during the 4-0 demolition of Sassuolo last weekend.

However, the game on Saturday did not start well for Osimhen as he gave away the penalty which Lookman scored from to give Atalanta the lead but made amends when he equalised at the other end to make it 1-1. He then turned provider as his pass was finished expertly by  Eljif Elmas for the victory.

Osimhen was replaced in the 75th minute by Giovanni Simeone while Lookman played for 81 minutes before he was substituted by Jeremie Boga. Osimhen is now the topscorer in the Serie A this season despite missing crucial games due to injury.
