Fomer captain of the Nigeria women’s national team, Desire Oparanozie has finally gotten a call-up to the Super Falcons, after a two-year absence.
Oparanozie was the captain of the side of the team at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, and since them, she has not been called up to the team, with Barcelona Femeni star, Asisat Oshoala leading the Falcons since then.
The 27-year-old striker is part of the Nigerian contingent that landed in Vienna, Austria, on Thursday to begin training ahead of the Aisha Buhari International Women Football Tournament.
The reason for Oparanozie’s omission from the team is unknown, but many followers of women’s football believe it is linked with the disagreement with the team leaders over players’ emoluments during the 2019 FIFAWomen’s World Cup in France.
The Aisha Buhari invitational is six-nation tournament will be played in Lagos and will also have countries like Ghana’s Black Queens, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses, Banyana Banyana of South Africa, Morocco and Mali in a celebratory atmosphere in September.
Oparanozie is among 26 players joined by technical and administrative staff at the Event Hotel Pyramide Vienna for total concentration as Coach Randy Waldrum and teams will fight for a glittering trophy named in honour of the first lady of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari.
