Former Flying Eagles forward, Taiwo Awoniyi began the 2021/22 Bundesliga season with a bang as he scored in Union Berlin’s 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the Alte Foersterei.
The 24-year-old played for Union on loan last season from Liverpool before completing a record move to the club permanently. The Nigerian netted five goals which helped the club finish in seventh place, qualifying for a European competition for the second time in their history.
On Saturday, Awoniyi wasted no time as he scored what looked like a contender for goal of the week in the seventh minute against Leverkusen as his powerful right foot shot from the edge of the box made it 1-0.
However, Leverkusen hit back four minutes later Moussa Diaby finished a pass to Jeremie Frimpong to end the first half 1-1. Taiwo Awoniyi was replaced in the 64th minute by Andreas Voglsammer but the score line remained the same after 90 minutes.
Union Berlin’s next match in the Bundesliga will be away against Hoffenheim.
