Nigeria has won gold in the 4x400m Mixed relay event at the ongoing World U20 Championships In Nairobi, Kenya.
The quartet of Johnson Nnamani, Imaobong Nse Uko, Opeyemi Oke and Bamidele Ajayi set a championship and African record of 3:19.70s to win in the debut event.
Nigeria started on a good note with Bamidele leading the rest of the field but lost the position by the second runner. Imaobong peaked at the right time to catch up to Poland before handing over to Nnamdi for the anchor leg.
Running behind the Poles, Nnamdi played catch up for the better part of the race before increasing his pace for the last 80m to overtake and win gold for Nigeria.
This is the first time, the Mixed Relay race will be contested for at the World U20 championships and Nigeria is the first winner.
