Nigeria v Cameroon: Things we learnt from the match

The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost 1-0 to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Stadion Wiener Neustadt, ABZ looks at the things we learnt from the game.

Rohr doesn’t do trial | It feels like every match is a competition for Gernot Rohr, so there’s nothing like fringe players with him. He goes all out with his best available players in every game. His lineup today was predicted by some pundits even before the game.

No identity for the Eagles | Nigeria dominated the entire match and had more attempts, but it is hard to say this is how they play. Not counter, not shengen pressing, not wing play, definitely not tiki-taka. They rely on individual brilliance.

Onuachu will keep struggling | Nigeria’s most prolific striker, Paul Onuachu, who scored over 30 goals for Genk didn’t enjoy his game as supply was not forthcoming. He has a huge presence in the box that draws opposition to him, but without the ball to his feet or head, he will continue to struggle.

Etebo and Simon have been missed | Moses Simon and Oghenekaro Etebo were arguably Nigeria’s best players on the day, causing the Cameroonians lots of problems with their movements and shots. They will want to start more for the team.

The new boys are not bad | Anayo Iwuala, Terem Moffi, Peter Olayinka, Abraham Marcus showed a few glimpse of what they can do for the team, hopefully, they’ll get more game time on Tuesday 8th of June.
