The Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) hours before facing Benin Republic in Porto Novo, AllBallerZone can report.
This was made possible after Sierra Leone and Lesotho played out a goalless draw on Saturday afternoon. The result leaves Sierra Leone third with four points and Lesotho remain bottom with just three points.
So, regardless of what happens in the final matches on Tuesday, the Super Eagles have made it to yet another AFCON tournament. Gernot Rohr’s men were massive favourites when the draws were held but after two consecutive wins they were pegged back by two surprise draws in the home and away fixture against Sierra Leone.
But their status was confirmed on Saturday after the draw between Sierra Leone and Lesotho. However, the Super Eagles will want to finish top of Group L with just one point separating them with second placed Benin Republic.
Nigeria currently sit top with eight points, closely followed by the Squirrels of Benin Republic on seven points while Sierra Leone and Lesotho are third and fourth with four and three points respectively. This will be the 19th–time the Super Eagles will be participating at AFCON.
