Former Super Eagles star John Mikel Obi has praised Eden Hazard’s talents, but questioned his dedication to be the best as he went on to label him the ‘worst trainer’ he has ever played with.
The former Nigerian international believes the Belgian superstar could’ve been as good as Cristiano Ronaldo, but he does not have the work ethic to back it up.
Both were teammates at Chelsea before the Nigerian left the Blues in 2017. During their time together, Mikel revealed he was in awe of the skill sets of the Belgian international.
“I’ve always said that one of the players who was the most gifted, had everything — pace, power, skill, technique — is Eden Hazard, Mikel told The Athletic He was just behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. But it was only if he wanted to be. He was that good.
However, despite his admiration for Hazard, Mikel questioned Hazard’s desire and
The Stoke City star revealed Hazard could’ve been as good as Ronaldo if he worked hard. Mikel added that Hazard is lazy in training, although that did not affect his performances in matches.
He said it himself sometimes, ‘If I want to be as good, I can be as good. Not as good as Messi because he is from a different planet but I think I can get close to Ronaldo or maybe even better’. These are the words that came out of his mouth but he is not that dedicated to the game. He doesn’t train well, he is the worst trainer I’ve played with.
But despite Hazard’s lazy attitude in training, Mikel revealed nobody complained because of the Belgian’s amazing talents
“Why was he so bad? Oh my god! Eden, Eden, Eden… ahhhhh. Because he was so good, nobody said anything. He would turn up on a Saturday and win us the game, the man of the match.
But on Monday and Tuesday, he would be at training and it was like he wasn’t even there. He just stood about, walking around.
Everyone else is kicking each other, screaming in training matches and he didn’t do any of that. But you saw on the pitch how good he is. It’s just not fair that some people have that much talent!”
