Lionel Messi scored twice for Barcelona following goals from Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie De Jong as Barcelona romped to a 4-0 demolition of Athletic Bilbao in the 2020/21 Copa Del Rey final on Saturday night in Seville.
The loss was Bilbao’s second successive final defeat suffered within a month after the Basque side fell by a lone goal to local rivals Real Sociedad earlier this month in the rescheduled 2019/20 Copa Del Rey final.
But for an hour, Bilbao were still in the contest as the score was somehow still goalless. That changed when Griezmann, whose wife recently gave birth to their third child, broke the deadlock on the hour mark of what was his first ever Copa Del Rey final appearance.
De Jong, who provided the assist for the opener, then got himself on the scoresheet three minutes later to put one hand on the trophy for Barcelona.
Then came Messi with the third to seal the win five minutes after De Jong’s goal, with the club captain putting the icing on the victory cake with his second of the night and Barca’s fourth in the 72nd minute.
Barcelona have now won the Copa Del Rey title 32 times, the most wins in the competition.
