Daniil Medvedev defeated Botic van de Zandschulp to reach the US Open semi-finals and keep his bid for a Grand Slam trophy alive. Medvedev will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last four.
The second seed Russian raced through to a two-set lead but Van de Zandschulp, despite looking exhausted, hit back. The Dutchman, 25, saved a match point in the fourth set but could not prevent Medvedev from winning 6-3 6-0 4-6 7-5.
The Canadian world number 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime progressed after 18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz retired while trailing 6-3 3-1. Alcaraz started to struggle in the second, ultimately indicating he could not go on.
Medvedev is seen as the most likely person to stop to Novak Djokovic’s bid for a calendar Grand Slam. He reached the final in New York two years ago but has already lost to Djokovic earlier this year in the Australian Open final
“In 2019 it was my first Grand Slam breakthrough. New York is already my heart. So semi-finals again, I want to do a bit better than the last few times and do this last test which is the toughest,” the 25-year-old said in his on-court interview.
