Youngster Kylian Mbappe missed his penalty as Switzerland came from two goals down to beat France in the shootout.
Switzerland took a surprise lead in the 15th minute after Haris Seferovic scored a header from a pinpoint cross by Steven Zuber.
Just 10 minutes after the restart, Switzerland were awarded a penalty, and France captain Hugo Lloris did well to save the spot-kick from Ricardo Rodriguez.
Then, two minutes later, the returning hero, Karim Benzema levelled for the world champions. Two minutes after that, the Real Madrid striker gave France a 2-1 lead.
In the 75th minute, Paul Pogba, who has been one of France’s best players in this tournament, scored a beautiful curler from long range, to give the French team a 3-1 lead.
Just like the drama between Croatia and Spain, Switzerland also started their comeback, and in the 81st minutes, Seferovic scored his and the Swiss second goals, and in the 90th minute, Mario Gavranovic scored an equalizer from a lovely Granit Xhaka pass, forcing the game to go to extratime.
After 90 minutes and 30 minutes extra time, both teams could not be separated, and it went into a penalty shootout, and Kylian Mbappe missed the fifth penalty for France after Yann Sommer saved his kick.
France are now out of the tournament, while Switzerland will face off with Spain in the quarter finals.
