Iwobi sees red as Super Eagles crash out of 2021 AFCON

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi saw a straight red card just five minutes after his introduction as the Super Eagles crashed out of the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a 1-0 defeat against Tunisia.

Nigeria were the bookies favourite to win the encounter while the Carthage Eagles had a lot to prove after losing two of two out of three group matches and only qualified as one of the best losers.

The first half was tactically tight but the Tunisian almost took the lead inside the first 10 minutes but a goal line clearance from Wilfred Ndidi. At the other end Moses Simon’s pass into Joe Aribo was slammed into the side netting.

It was a strong defensive display from both sides as it ended goalless. The second half was lively as the game picked up pace and saw chances for both sides but it was Tunisia that went in front.

Youssef Msakni, who was the danger man for the Covid-19 ravaged Carthage Eagles, collected the ball from midfield and turned Ndidi before releasing a right foot shot which swerved past Maduka Okoye in goal for Nigeria.

The Super Eagles push for the equaliser was hampered when Alex Iwobi saw a straight red card after the VAR check. Wilfred Ndidi had two long range shots go off target, Moses Simons effort was blocked by the goalkeeper but the best chance for Nigeria fell to substitute Sadiq Umar – but he failed to find the net as Tunisia held out for a shock 1-0 victory and progressed into the quarter-finals where they will face Burkina Faso.
