Super Eagles and Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi has debunked claim by pundits, football lovers and fans that he is good enough to fill Austin Jay-Jay Okocha’s boot in the national team set up.
The former Arsenal star confirmed that he admires his uncle a lot but he cannot fill the shoes of the former Paris Saint-Germain mercurial midfielder.
“Yes, I admire my uncle greatly and was such a gifted star player in his playing days,” he said.
“For me to pick his shoes because of my relationship with him means I have to leave the pitch and go back to the dressing room for such favour but that will mean I’m no longer active to do what I know best.
“I think the best answer to this recurrent question is that Okocha created a shoe for himself, no matter how big but I want to express myself and continue to develop my footballing career.”
He went further to claim that Okocha set a high standard in the National team fold before he retired and he is just focused on being himself rather than chasing his uncle’s achievement.
“It’s a good thing to aim to better my uncle’s achievements but he has set such a high standard that the best thing to do is to remain focused since age is still very much on my side,” he added.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Benin Republic in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers later today and the Everton midfielder is expected to make coach Gernot Rohr’s XI.
