Alex Iwobi came off the bench and grabbed an assist as Everton came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at Goodison Park.
New manager Rafa Benitez preferred new signings Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend over the Super Eagles midfielder as they welcomed the Saints to Merseyside in their premier league opener.
Interestingly, the visitors led at half-time after a mistake by the Toffees defence allowed new signing Adam Armstrong capitalize to score. Iwobi, who enjoyed a fine pre-season, replaced Townsend in the 70th minute and six minutes later, he set up Abdoulaye Doucouré for the equalizer.
Everton turned the game around as Richarlison, who just returned from helping Brazil win the 2020 Olympic football gold, scored to make it 2-1 and England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin wrapped it up with a third goal.
Everton will travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United in their next Premier League match while Southampton will play host to Manchester United next Sunday.
