The youngster expects a tough encounter when the two African giants clash tonight- even though it’s only an international friendly match
New Super Eagles star Terem Moffi says the rivalry between Nigeria and Cameroon makes tonight’s international friendly encounter a big game.
The Super Eagles and Cameroon are no strangers to each other, having met on 22 previous occasions. The two countries have eight Africa Cup of Nations titles between them, with Cameroon winning five while Nigeria have three.
Nigeria have been on the receiving end of some heartbreaking losses against Cameroon, with three of the Indomitable Lions Afcon titles coming against the Super Eagles.
However, the Super Eagles are unbeaten against their rivals since 2000 and hold the edge in the head-to-head record with 11 wins.
Although tonight’s encounter is just a friendly game, Moffi expects a difficult encounter, saying it’s always a big match irrespective of the competition.
“Growing up, I heard about Nigeria versus Cameroon from my father, and it is always a rivalry because they are our neighbours. It has always been a big game, and nothing changes that,” Moffi told Soccernet.ng in Vienna.
This is Moffi’s first call-up to the Super Eagles squad after a brilliant season in the Ligue 1, where he scored 14 goals to help Lorient avoid relegation.
Moffi revealed it’s a dream to finally play for the national team, saying he shared the news with his family when he got the call.
“I didn’t know what to say. I had to screenshot the message and send it to my family group chat to see it because I had no clue of an answer to give to him. It was amazing; I was quite surprised.
“As a footballer, you want to play for your national team. It was a dream come true for me,” the 21-year-old added.
