It is the joy of every national team coach, to have all his players doing well for their respective clubs, but on the flip side, they will have selection headaches. Here, we take a look at Gernot Rohr‘s headache.
In the goalkeeping position, we all know Rohr’s first choice is Sparta Rotherham’s Maduka Okoye. In central defense, it’s the “oyimbo wall” William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun, Zaidu Sanusi on the left.
His first selection headache will be on the right. Who should be the right-back? There’s Ola Aina, Tyronne Ebuehi, Chidozie Awaziem, and Shehu Abdullahi. All 4 players have done well in that position for the Super Eagles and they have been playing well for their club side.
In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo with either Alex Iwobi or Oghenekaro Etebo. Rohr’s biggest worry will be, “who will play in the front 3?”
There’s Paul Onuachu, who has scored 27 goals this season. There’s Kelechi Iheanacho in the form of his life with 12 goals and 5 assists, there’s Henry Onyekuru with 5 goals in 10 games for Galatasaray, and Alex Iwobi with Samuel Chukwueze. Then, there’s Rohr’s number one striker, Victor Osimhen.
The Franco-German boss will have to study his boys well as they continue to prepare for their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations against Benin Republic in Porto-Novo, and field whoever he believes will be more suited for his style.
Who do you think should start up front?
