Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti has revealed that Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen will not start against Polish side Legia Warsaw tonight, although the Europa League game in tonight’s Europa League Match-day 3 game.
The Nigerian has been in fantastic form this season, scoring eight goals in all competitions so far for the Azzurri’s and has become a firm fan favourite at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
However, Spalletti wants the 22-year-old to start from the bench despite rating the game against Legia Warsaw ‘decisive’ for their Europa League aspirations.
“This is a decisive game, I am convinced that it will be very difficult to remain in the competition if we don’t win,” Spalletti said at a press conference.
“Perhaps, it could be Osimhen’s game, but he won’t start because we have a lot of quality up front. Mertens’ return is important because it allows us to have more options. We need certainties and leaders to aim for big results. He is one of those, he likes to take his responsibilities. We’ve been waiting for him and we are happy to have him back.
“[Piotr] Zielinski has a minor problem, so he is not available, Mertens will play, he will either start or come off the bench. Piotr will remain out as a precaution. He will be available against Roma.”
Napoli have just a point so far after a 2-2 draw against Leicester City and a home defeat against Spartak Moscow in September.
