Three-time champions, Spain waited for penalties before beating Switzerland 3-1 after the game ended 1-1.
Spain scored the opening goal early in the 8th minute of the game after Jordi Alba half volley was deflected into the net by Deni Zakaria to score the 10th own goal of the finals.
Switzerland equalized in the 68th minute, following a terrible defending from Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres, as the ball fell to Remo Freuler, who set the ball for Xherdan Shaqiri and the Liverpool man coolly finished.
Freuler then switched from hero to villain, as he got sent off 10 minutes later after a reckless tackle on Gérard Moreno, and referee, Michael Oliver sent him off. After 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time, the game goes to penalty.
After 10 attempts – 5 each – Spain won 3-1 on penalties and will set up a semifinal clash against the winner between Belgium and Italy.
