Five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo and his former Real Madrid teammate, Karim Benzema were the heroes as Portugal versus France ends in 2-2.
Ronaldo scored the opening goal from the penalty in the 30th minute, after France keeper, Hugo Lloris fouled Danilo. The Portugal captain made no mistake.
Just before the break, Benzema scored the equalizer for France, also from the penalty, as Kylian Mbappe was fouled by Nelson Semedo in the 18-yard box.
Two minutes after the restart, the Real Madrid striker gave France a 2-1 lead, after beating the offside from a Paul Pogba long pass. Benzema coolly finished past Rui Patricio.
Ronaldo was not finished, as his cross was handled in the box by Jules Kounde, and the referee pointed to the spot. The Portugal captain scored the resulting penalty in the hour mark, to become the joint highest goalscorer, in international football.
Both France and Portugal qualified for the second round with five and four points respectively. Germany, who played 2-2 with Hungary, also qualified from Group F, the “group of death”.
