Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric was the hero as Croatia defeated Scotland 3-1 to book an automatic spot in the second round, and Raheem Sterling’s lone strike was enough to send England to the top of the table.
Nikola Vlasic scored the opening goal in the 17th minute from an Ivan Perisic assist. After a series of attacking moves, Callum McGregor levelled three minutes before the break for Scotland.
After the hour mark, Modric marked his 100th competitive appearance with a beautiful outside foot laced shot from the edge of the box to give Croatia a 2-1 lead. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner then provided an assist from the corner kick as Perisic headed home in the 77th minute, securing their first-ever win over Scotland.
England, on the other hand, needed just a lone goal from Raheem Sterling to defeat the Czech Republic, to go to the top of Group D.
Sterling hit the woodwork early in the game after chipping the keeper, but in the 12th minute, he headed home from close range, a cross from Jack Grealish, and it was enough to win all three points at Wembley.
After three group games, England finished top with seven points, Croatia are second with four points, while the Czech Republic sit third, but will qualify as one of the third-best teams in the tournament.
