Eagles XI vs Benin: Onyekuru replaces Iwobi, Etebo, Onuachu benched

A late decision was made by Super Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr as Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi was dropped from the team after a suspected Covid-19 related case, AllBallerZone gathered.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been scheduled to start the match against the Squirrels and traveled from Nigeria to Porto Novo but after the routine Covid-19 protocols as mandated by CAF and FIFA it was discovered that the nephew to Austin Okocha could not participate in the match and was immediately removed from the team.

Iwobi will self-isolate as the rest of the squad prosecute the game against Benin Republic which was made inconsequential after Nigeria qualified for the 2021 AFCON tournament due to the goalless draw by Sierra Leone and Lesotho.

In-form Galasaray winger, Henry Onyekuru gets the nod of the manager to replace Iwobi and will play from the left of midfield while Samuel Chukwueze will play on the right.

Another big casualty in the starting XI is Nigeria’s top scorer in Europe this season, Paul Onuachi who drops to the bench as Gernot Rohr prefers a strike combination of Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Osimhen.
