The forgotten Super Eagles star couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the new campaign following a below-par season in his first year at the club
Cyriel Dessers came off the bench to help Genk to a 1-1 draw at Standard Leige in this season’s Belgium Pro League opener.
Dessers joined Genk from Heracles last season, but he struggled for game time as he was overshadowed by his international teammate, Paul Onuachu.
Onuachu made history last season as he scored 33 league goals in 35 games, including the playoffs. This has led to increase speculation over his future, although he led the line for Genk on Friday night.
But he could not find the back of the net although he had two shots on target and missed a big chance. With Onuachu fluffing his lines, Genk coach decided to take him off just two minutes after the hour mark for Dessers.
And Dessers repaid his manager’s trust but not after Konstantinos Laifis had given Liege the lead in the 69th minute.
Genk were staring at a defeat until the former Utrecht striker set up Theo Bongonda deep into added time for a last minute equaliser.
