The Blues are set to lose one of their Academy stars that impressed on loan in the Belgian top-flight last season
Ike Ugbo is close to sealing a permanent move away from Chelsea, with Genk the likely destination. According to transfer market expert, Fabrizio Romano, the Super Eagles hopeful has agreed personal terms with the Belgian club.
Ugbo is familiar with the Belgian Jupiler League, having spent last season on loan with Cercle Brugge. The 22-year-old’s 16 league goals helped Cercle Brugge avoid relegation.
Groen en Zwart were interested in keeping him, but they could not afford to buy him outrightly, while Ugbo was not interested in another loan deal.
Ugbo’s potential arrival at Genk could see him replace Paul Onuachu, who is expected to leave the Smurfs after a record-breaking campaign.
The youngster was born in England to Nigerian parents and has represented the Three Lions at youth level, but he’s ready to play for Nigeria at international level.
