Scotland’s slim chance of reaching the Euro 2020 knock-out stage has been dealt a major blow after their midfield star plying his trade for Chelsea, Billy Gilmour, tested positive for Covid-19.
The positive test result means the 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder will miss the crucial final group match against Croatia days after being named Star-of-the-Match when Scotland played out a goalless draw with rivals, England, at Wembley.
According to a statement by the Scotland national team, “We can confirm that Billy Gilmour has tested positive for COVID-19. Having liaised with Public Health England, Billy will now self-isolate for 10 days and therefore miss tomorrow’s UEFA EURO 2020 Group D match against Croatia at Hampden.”
Scotland must beat Croatia in order to reach the round of 16 as anything less would send them packing from the tournament. And even with qualification, Gilmour would be a doubt to feature again in the Euros unless Scotland make it to the quarter-final stage.
Here’s wishing the midfield star a quick recovery. Remember to observe Covid-19 protocols when you go out.
