Benzema helps Real Madrid beat Barcelona

Real Madrid captain on the night, Karim Benzema scored a cheeky goal to help 10-man Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano.

The Blancos took the lead in the 13th minute following a counter-attack from Fede Valverde, who gave a pass to Lucas Vasquez to send in a low cross before Benzema finished past Marc-André ter Stegen. Toni Kroos made it 2-0 in the 28th minute after his freekick deflected off 2 Barcelona players. Oscar Mingueza pulled one back for the visitors on the hour mark, but it was not enough to win 3 points.

Barcelona thought they had won a penalty after the VAR team called the referee’s attention to a foul on Martin Braithwaite, but the match official stood by his decision. Young Ilaix Moriba thought he had equalized with the last attempt in the game, but his shot hit the frame of the goal and it ended 1-0.

Casemiro received his marching orders in the 90th minute for his second bookable offence, few seconds after his first yellow card for his foul on Lionel Messi, but his teammates held on to the lead.

With the win, Real Madrid go top of the La Liga table, pending Atlético Madrid’s result away to Real Betis, while Barcelona dropped down to third.
