Arsenal turned on the style in the Carabao Cup second qualifying round as they hammered West Brom 6-0 at the Hawthorns on Wednesday night.
Morale was low for Mikel Arteta and his boys following defeats to Brentford and Chelsea in their opening two fixtures in the premier league and needed to put in a good performance especially for the travelling fans.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who made his first start of the season in the encounter scored twice before creating another for Ivorian international Nicolas Pepe to end the first half with an emphatic 3-0 lead.
The second half wasn’t much different as the outstanding Bukayo Saka made it 4-0 with an assist from the returning Martin Odegaard. Aubameyang grabbed his hat-trick with a beautiful curler from the edge of the box before substitute Alexandre Lacazette made it 6-0 to send the Gunners into the third round of the Carabao Cup.
After the match, Aubameyang told Sky Sports: “Great feeling. I’m happy we won this game. It’s good to build confidence of the team.
“The commitment of every player is always there 100%. We try our best to give the fans what they want. This hopefully can give us something to build our confidence for the next games. We had to work hard and keep pushing.
“Everyone knows I like the space [in behind a defence]. My team-mates played very well. It was a good game today. We still have 36 games left so we will give our best for a good season.”
