Akwa United Secure Slim Home Win In CAF Champions League Game

Ubong Friday fired in a ferocious shot in the 87th minute to give NPFL champions, Akwa United a slim first leg lead against CR Belouizdad in a CAF champions league game played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

The goal from Ubong who also doubles as the captain of the day is the first ever goal for the Promise Keepers in the CAF Champions League.

The ball fell kindly to Ubong at the edge of CR Belouizdad, the captain lifted the ball to his left before unleashing an unstoppable half volley that beat Merbah in goal for the Algerian team.

Missing their top striker and league highest goal scorer, Charles Ashiemene, who moved to Portugal, Akwa United were guilty of missing the chances that came their way in the game.

In the 58th minute, Wasiu Alalade had Akwa United’s best chance after a pass by James Ajako but his attempt goes millimeters off target.

Coach of the team, Kennedy Boboye spoke on his team’s performance and how they are trying to build a new team.

“This is what we have gotten. Most of these players we tried to get didn’t come. We can’t stop players from travelling. It’s unfortunate that we started the tournament very early. We haven’t been able to play together for a long time. By the time we surpass this stage, we would be better than before.
