Nigeria’s men basketball team, D’Tigers have been eliminated from the 2021 Afrobasket, after an 80-68 loss to Ugandan in the quarterfinal qualifying match.
The Silverbacks had a great start in the first quarter, and despite the D’Tigers fight to close the gap, Ugandan still won by 24-12 points.
The second quarter started just like the first, and it was the Ugandans, who had a better start, but a later resurgence from D’Tigers helped them close the gap with the Africans winning by 20-19. The first half ended 44-31.
Just like the first two quarters, the Silverbacks also won the third quarter by 23-18, taking the total score to 67-49. From then on, an 18 point deficit was a difficult task for the Nigerians.
In the final quarter, it was the Nigerians, who won with 19-13, just 6 points, and it was not enough to force overtime as the Silverbacks of Ugandan defeated the D’Tigers of Nigeria 80-68.
Uzodinma Utomi had the most points in the game with 23 points, while Ugandan’s Emmanuel Omogbo had the second-most points as he posted 19 points.
Three other D’Tigers players posted double figures of points. Stephen George Domingo had 13 points, Jeremiah Mordi recorded 12 points, and Ikenna Ndugba got 10 points in the losing effort.
Uganda have now qualified for the quarterfinal and will take on Cape Verde on Thursday, September second, 2021.
