Nigeria’s most in-form striker, Paul Onauchu rose to the occasion in the Match-Day 5 of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic when he scored the winner to end an 8-year record in Porto Novo.
The Genk forward who has already scored 27 goals for his club this season came from the bench and powered home the winner in the 93rd minute to hand Genort Rohr’s team a win following two consecutive draws against Sierre Leone.
As reported by AllBallerZone earlier, the Squirrels had not tasted defeat at home since 2013 but Onauchu who was initially not invited proved to be the difference as Nigeria keep hold of Group L top spot with 11points ahead of their final match in the qualifiers on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles had already qualified for their 19th AFCON tournament after Sierre Leone and Lestho played out a goalless draw on Saturday afternoon. Benin are second in the group with 7points while Sierra Leone and Lesotho with four and three points are third and fourth on the log respectively.
