Ahead of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener against Egypt, Super Eagles interim manager, Austin Eguavoen has declared that the Pharaohs are ‘no pushovers.’
Nigeria will play in Group D alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau with the three-time African champions scheduled to face the Pharaohs on January 11 at the Stade Omnisport de Garoua.
Speaking with NFF TV, he said: Egypt are 7-time winners. It’s a team I have played and coached against, at junior level as well. We know what they bring to the table and they are not a pushover – mind you, every team that has qualified for the AFCON is not a pushover.”
“So, we are going to do everything possible to see how we are going to analyse them individually and collectively and map-out a strategy and that is what we expect from them as well because Nigeria is a big name and a big country in terms of football. Other teams will also be planning, yes, we are doing that and we will continue to do that until we find a solution on how we can take care of them.”
Eguavoen replaced German tactician and Nigeria’s longest serving manager in the history, Gernot Rohr following some poor results earlier this month and he is expected to return to his director of football post after the Africa Cup of Nations.
