Nigeria will be without striker Odion Ighalo when the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Cameroon on Sunday January 9.
Ighalo is part of the 28-man squad named by interim boss Austin Eguavoen but he will not represent the team in Cameroon after his Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab denied him from travelling.
The club revealed they prevented Ighalo from linking up with his teammates because the invitation from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) came in late.
The 32-year-old only returned to international football in November after initially retiring from Super Eagles duty following the 2019 AFCON.
Ighalo’s situation is also similar to that of Emmanuel Dennis, who also had to drop out of the Super Eagles squad after Watford blocked him from travelling.
It remains to be seen who Eguavoen has in mind to call up as replacement for the ex-Watford man, but ABZ gathered that the Super Eagles boss has decided against calling up another player.
